Kathleen has been featured across podcasts, interviews and in print. A pioneer in Christchurch’s dog care scene, she is the original dog massage therapist in Christchurch – growing The Balanced Dog from the ground up and recognised for her science-backed approach to Fear Free care.
She has also appeared before the Christchurch City Council, representing herself and clients, in hearings about the City’s dog control bylaw. In 2026, she also appeared before the Primary Production Select Committee’s hearing about the greyhound racing ban for New Zealand.
The Canine Corner
Kathleen writes The Canine Corner for NZ Dog World, the magazine of Dogs New Zealand. This feature started in 2010 and continues today, covering a range of dog-related topics. Here are a few examples:
Thought for paws - the importance of paws
Dogs New Zealand, June 2026
Paws are remarkable, resilient structures, yet they are often overlooked. In this column, I discuss why regular paw and nail checks matter for mobility, injury prevention and long-term joint health.
Dog toys collect dust, saliva, bacteria and allergens. Keeping them clean helps hygiene at home, makes them last longer, and keeps your dog's favourites around for more hours of fun.
Caring for a blind dog can have its challenges, but it can also be incredibly rewarding. A look at visually impaired dogs at every level, and how to set up your home to help them.
In May 2025, I was interviewed by Dr Susan Recker of the Integrative Animal Health Collective podcast. This interview lasts for just over 40 minutes and reviews my education, work history, career highlights and advice for others seeking a career in the field of dog massage, rehab and fitness training. This was one of the most thorough interviews I have had during my career, covering my practice and qualifications, Fear Free, anxiety and pain in dogs, diet types and other topics. In December 2019, I was interviewed for the Dogs of New Brighton podcast. In Part I, I answer questions about my qualifications and practice and explain what occurred during Jess the Dog’s massage. In Part 2, I discuss Fear Free techniques, why I use a massage table, and the legal status of physiotherapy on animals in New Zealand. We also talk about responsible dog ownership and our Birthday Club.
